Decisive, Successful, Engaged.
After reading Jeff LaMarche and John Gruber talk about the tempest in a teacup regarding WWDC selling out so quickly, I couldn’t help but smile. I think the current system is perfect for creating the best developer event possible. I think that is true because of the kind of person this system encourages to attend.
I think we’ll find WWDC filled with decisive, successful, and engaged people this year. Which sounds just about as good as it gets.
Decisive: You have to be very focused about your commitment to the Apple platform to make a decision like this quickly. No room for people hemming and hawing about if they thing it would be worth their time.
Successful: WWDC costs around $3500 for an american attendee (more from overseas). Having to make a decision this quickly, involving that large of a sum of money, will lead to a very successful group. Keep in mind that is about the same cost as an 8-Core MacPro.
Engaged: While I’m sure there will be sob stories about people who happened to be disconnected yesterday, generally speaking if you were able to get your ticket yesterday it meant that you are connected and engaged in Apple news. I purchased my ticket the moment I heard about it, before the official announcement email, and even while on a conference call with a client.
Oh and about making the event larger. Last year felt over crowded already. With lines everywhere. If you don’t believe diluting something typically makes it worse make yourself a Jack&Coke and then pour it into a 2 liter bottle of cola. Dilution ruins nuance.
